Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

Did you know that if you are pregnant, you are more than twice as likely to develop a yeast infection than women who are not pregnant.  So just why are you more likely to suffer if your pregnant ?

  • Many pregnant women will be feeling more emotional than usual, this emotional stress will lead to a lowering of the effectiveness of the immune system, which in turn will increase the likelihood of yeast overgrowth.
  • Also, many pregnant women will have cravings for foods which are high in sugars and refined carbohydrates.  Eating more of these foods increases the chances of excess yeast production.
  • During pregnancy, a woman’s body will be subject to hormonal, physiological and psychological changes.  These changes can all contribute to promoting excessive candida overgrowth.
  • Hormones produced during pregnancy affect the inside of the vagina, which again can encourage yeast production in excess of it’s normal limits.

If you do develop a yeast infection whilst you are pregnant, it is most important that you do NOT ignore it.  If the yeast infection is not treated appropriately, it could lead to systemic yeast infection, which would have significant negative effects on your quality of life.  Also, if left untreated, the yeast infection could be passed to your baby during pregnancy or through the birth canal during childbirth.  A yeast infection could also be passed to your baby later on, during breast feeding.

If you are pregnant and you develop a yeast infection, you may not want to use an anti-fungal treatment or take anti-biotics – in this case you will need to find an alternative treatment.
