Oral Yeast Infection
Oral yeast infections, commonly referred to as oral thrush are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus candida albicans infectiong the mucus membranes within the mouth.
The term oral thrush is commonly used to describe the condition in babies, whereas an infection in an adult is generally referred to as candidosis or moniliasis.
If you have an oral yeast infection, then you will usually find thick creamy white or yellowish deposits on your tongue and on the inside of your cheeks. The surrounding areas can appear red and inflamed and adults may suffer with a burning sensation and general discomfort.
There are certain groups who are more susceptible to oral yeast infections. These groups include – smokers, those with badly fitting dentures, those with new or recent oral piercings, newborn babies (especially those breastfeeding), people with a lowered immune system (either as a result of diseases such as HIV/AIDS or from chemotherapy treatment) and people with diabetes.
In many people oral thrush can be treated using anti fungal drugs administered orally. However patients who are suffering due to a lowered immune system may need a more aggressive treatment and may require anti fungal drugs to be administered intravenously.
