Intestinal Yeast Infection
Yeast Infections are very common, it is a fairly well known fact that most women and some men will suffer from a yeast infection at some time during their life. The most common form of yeast infection in women is a vaginal yeast infection. However there is a form of yeast infection that is not so common and you may not have heard of. Its a intestinal yeast infection and it affects both men and women, in fact it is actually more prevalent in men.
There are always levels of yeast present in the intestines of everyone. The amount of yeast present in the intestines is governed by the presence of bacteria in the intestines. However this balance can be quite delicate and the scales can quite easily be tipped in such a way as to allow the yeast to multiply excessively.
There can be many reasons why the growth of the yeast in the intestines becomes excessive, these can include :
- Consuming too many foods which contain high levels of yeast or high levels of sugar.
- The taking of antibiotics.
- Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, especially beers and ales that will naturally contain high levels of yeast.
- Having a lowered and less effective immune system.
Some of the symptoms of an intestinal yeast infection are :
- Constipation in some people
- Diarrhea in others
- Severe or persistent wind and gas is also a common symptom.
Because these symptoms are not necessarily thought of as being caused by an infection, an intestinal yeast infection often goes undiagnosed for quite some time. If you are suffering from any or all of the above symptoms you can be checked out by having your stools tested.
